Though Rutherford B. Hayes considered himself a reformer and was nominated by the Republican Party in 1876 because he had been one of the few government officials who had managed to keep himself free of scandal during the years of the corrupt Grant Administration, Hayes's election to the Office of President, which actually came about by way of a back-room political deal, led to his receiving the nickname "Rutherfraud Hayes".
